A Break

I stepped over cracks
Wished upon a star
Said a prayer or two
Or three
Crossed my fingers
I even threw salt over my shoulder
Knocked three times on every wood
And tossed many coins in a fountain
Quarters, half dollars
Whatever I had
But nature takes its own course
And tomorrow is not a promise

Last night, just before midnight, near the time she came into this world, my mother left it. Now she is free of pain, at peace, and living in the place of faith.
